Also, skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells. It occurs when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells (most often caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunshine or tanning beds) triggers mutations, or genetic defects, that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors.

Skin Cancer Melanoma

The estimated five-year survival rate for patients whose melanoma is detected early is about 99 percent in the U.S. The survival rate falls to 63 percent when the disease reaches the lymph nodes and 20 percent when the disease metastasizes to distant organs.

Melanoma occurs when the pigment-producing cells that give color to the skin become cancerous. Its symptoms might include a new, unusual growth or a change in an existing mole. Melanomas can occur anywhere on the body.
Avoid tanning and never use UV tanning beds. Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day.

Skin Cancer On Face

This nonmelanoma skin cancer may appear as a firm red nodule, a scaly growth that bleeds or develops a crust, or a sore that doesn’t heal.

It most often occurs on the nose, forehead, ears, lower lip, hands, and other sun-exposed areas of the body. Squamous cell carcinoma is curable if caught and treated early.

Squamous cell carcinomas may appear as flat reddish or brownish patches in the skin, often with a rough, scaly, or crusted surface.

They tend to grow slowly and usually occur on sun-exposed areas of the body, such as the face, ears, neck, lips, and backs of the hands.

Skin Cancer Prevention

There are so many skin cancer prevention which are listed below;

  • Avoid tanning beds. Ultraviolet light from tanning beds can cause skin cancer and premature skin aging.
  • Wear protective clothing, such as a lightweight long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, when possible.
  • Seek shade when appropriate, remembering that the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If your shadow is shorter than you are, seek shade.
  • Consider using a self-tanning product if you want to look tan, but continue to use sunscreen with it.
  • Use extra caution near water, snow, and sand, as they reflect the damaging rays of the sun, which can increase your chance of sunburn.

Skin Cancer Spot

On this, I will advise you to use the ABCDE rule” to look for some of the common signs of melanoma, one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer:

  1. Asymmetry: One part of a mole or birthmark doesn’t match the other.
  2. Border: The edges are irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred.
  3. Color: The color is not the same all over and may include shades of brown or black, sometimes with patches of pink, red, white, or blue.
  4. Diameter: The spot is larger than ¼ inch across – about the size of a pencil eraser.
  5. Evolving: The mole is changing in size, shape, or color.

Skin Cancer Treatment

If caught early, most squamous cell carcinomas are curable and cause minimal damage. However, the larger and deeper a tumor grows, the more dangerous and potentially disfiguring it may become, and the more extensive the treatment must be.If left untreated, SCCs may spread (metastasize) to local lymph nodes, distant tissues and organs and can become life-threatening.

Treatment varies and may include surgery and sometimes chemotherapy and radiation.
